On the south coast, just minutes from the airport, this giant turtle reserve is the result of the passion for the natural heritage of the island. According to François Leguat three turtle species dating from the 18th century has been documented here, you can visit a beautiful natural cave with a guide to accompany you.
The Saturday market in Port Mathurin is as busy as Rodrigues gets and it’s the best place on the island to shop for fresh produce and souvenirs. It’s open the rest of the week but really gears up on Saturday, when much of the island turns out. It’s next to the bridge near the post office.
In Rodrigues, octopus is a much appreciated local delicacy, loved for its taste and tenderness. Whether in a salad or as a curry, “vindaye” or “daube”, the octopus is the closest thing you will find to Rodriguan national dish. It is present in every restaurant menu and is a big part of a regular Rodriguan diet.
